What We Saw on Our First Community Visit: The Reality on the Ground

There is a profound difference between reading statistics about poverty and standing in the middle of a community where those numbers take on names, faces, and stories. At Tobi’sTouch Empowerment Foundation, our mission has always been rooted in action.  Our team conducted our first official community visit to witness firsthand the challenges facing our local neighbourhoods.

What we found was a mixture of incredible resilience and heartbreaking systemic gaps. This post takes you behind the scenes of that journey showing you exactly what is happening, who we are meeting, and why your support is the bridge these communities desperately need.

Problem Visibility: This is What’s Happening

Walking through the outskirts of the community, the "problem" isn't a vague concept; it is visible in every corner. We observed families living in cramped, precarious housing with limited access to consistent clean water.

The most striking observation, however, was the educational and vocational standstill. We met dozens of young adults with sharp minds but no tools. Without access to basic digital literacy or trade skills, they are effectively locked out of the modern economy. The cycle of poverty isn't just about a lack of money; it’s about a lack of a starting point.

Human Proof: This is Who We’re Helping

During our visit, we were reminded of why specific, vocational support is so vital when we caught up with Olamide Esther. Olamide is currently in her final year at the University of Lagos, balancing the intense pressure of her degree with the reality of being largely self-funded.

Recognising her drive, Tobi’sTouch sponsored Olamide through a professional makeup and styling kit alongside comprehensive training. Instead of struggling to find menial work that distracts from her studies, Olamide now has a high-value skill she can use to support her final year of university. She isn't looking for a handout; she is using her "makeup kit" as a launchpad for her independence. When we empower a student like Olamide, we aren't just giving a gift we are ensuring a bright mind actually reaches the finish line of her education.

Process Transparency: This is How We Operate

At Tobi’sTouch, we don't believe in "helicoptering" in with random donations. Our visit was the first step in our Needs-Led Assessment Process:

  1. Direct Observation: Identifying physical infrastructure gaps.

  2. Community Dialogue: Sitting down with local leaders to understand their specific priorities.

  3. Gap Mapping: Matching community needs with our empowerment modules (Vocational Training, Financial Literacy, and Mentorship).

By documenting every gap from the lack of stable electricity for evening classes to the shortage of sewing machines for local tailors we ensure that every penny donated is used with surgical precision.

Social Proof: Others Trust and Support This

We weren't alone on this visit. We were joined by local volunteers and two of our early corporate partners who wanted to see the impact of their CSR contributions.

"Seeing the transparency of Tobi’sTouch on the ground gives us the confidence that our resources are reaching the people who actually need them. This isn't just charity; it's community building." Lead Volunteer Coordinator

Clear Ask: Here’s How You Can Help

The gaps we saw are wide, but they are not insurmountable. We saw the potential for a thriving, self-sustaining community it just needs a spark.

This is why our work matters. We are currently raising funds to launch our first "Empowerment Hub" in this area, which will provide the vocational training and toolkits that students like Olamide and her peers so desperately need.

  • Donate: Even a small contribution helps purchase essential training equipment.

  • Share: Follow us on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/tobistouchfoundation_?igsh=cHJ3enByejZscXc=  to see the videos and photos from our visit and share our mission with your network.

  • Volunteer: Use your professional skills to mentor a budding entrepreneur.
